When asked about “harm reduction” many people might think first of needle exchange programs for those who use injectable drugs.
But the idea of reducing harm is far broader, much like mental wellness is not only about treating illness – everyone stands to benefit.
With that in mind, here are 10 things we can do to reduce harm:
- Set parental controls on your television and/or watch with your kids
- Teach your children accurate names for body parts
- Keep a fire extinguisher within arms reach of your stove
- Take a basic first-aid/CPR course
- Carry a first-aid kit in your vehicle
- Ensure you have working smoke alarms and CO2 detectors in your home and change the batteries regularly
- Return your unused or expired medications to the pharmacy for safe disposal
- Turn your cell phone off for a half-hour a couple of times a day; turn it off at night if you can
- At the end of a hard day, chose a healthier option to unwind, such as taking a walk, listening to music or cuddling with a pet
- Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
