Withdrawal Management

Community Withdrawal Management Services (CWMS)

CWMS aims to help people 16 and older who want help to stop or cut back on their alcohol or drug use. It is for people who expect mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms and don’t want, or need to, go to a live-in withdrawal program (detox). This includes people who are slowly reducing certain medications under a doctor’s plan (tapering).

You may be able to participate if you:

  • Live in Simcoe County
  • Have manageable health symptoms (no serious withdrawal risks – seizure history, stroke, heart problems)

The program lasts about 4 weeks and runs Monday to Friday. It includes:

  • A plan to help you through withdrawal
  • Daily check-ins for the first 5–10 days
  • Tips to manage symptoms of withdrawal
  • Referrals to other supports if needed

CWMS is not a medical program; if you have serious health symptoms, you may be referred to other services.

If you want to use medication during withdrawal, you can talk to your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or a community clinic—but it’s not required.

NOTE: in person supports for CWMS are in Barrie only at this time; however, you may be supported virtually in other communities.

Refer to our MWMS program for alternate withdrawal management options.
