Adult Group Therapy Programs – Barrie and Area
A psycho educational group developed to assist clients mandated by various agencies to complete a substance abuse treatment program. This 6 week program covers a variety of topics including alcohol and drug education, concepts of harm reduction, handling high risk situations, safety planning, coping skills, stages of change, communication and assertiveness, dealing with emotions, the importance of self care and supports both formal and informal. Completion of this group does not limit the client’s ability to access additional group or agency supports.
Duration – 6 weeks, 1.5 hours per session
A psycho educational group designed for clients in the contemplation, planning or early action stages of change. This 8 week program aims to assist clients in early recovery by promoting group discussion, understanding and skill development while providing tools that may assist in making changes to substance use. Topics include the concept of harm reduction, stages of change, goal setting, recognizing and understanding triggers and cravings, coping skills, boundaries, communication and assertiveness, understanding emotions, the importance of supports, and self care. This group has been developed as introduction to the concepts of recovery.
Duration – 8 Weeks, 1.5 to 2 hrs per session
This group is designed for clients in the action or maintenance phase who have experienced some period of active change (suggested minimum 3 moths) and encompasses concepts of relapse prevention. Along with educational and skill development components this program relies heavily on group discussion and peer support. Topics include triggers and coping skills, healthy relationships, self esteem, self image, cognitive distortions, dealing with emotions, communication, boundaries and assertiveness, supports, recreation and resources.
Duration – 10 weeks, 2 hrs per session
This group is designed for clients who have completed a treatment program and are seeking additional support to maintain momentum, reinforce learned concepts and benefit from the lived experience of other members. This group relies almost exclusively on group discussion and peer support with topics being generated through individual client check ins. Group facilitators will be provided with materials to help generate discussion if the need arises.
(Please note: Completion of a treatment program may also include clients who have been discharged as completed from individual counselling)
